“Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek.”
So begins the upcoming River HomeLink Theatre production of Shrek the Musical Jr., a tale of unlikely friendships and the path to self-acceptance. Under the direction of Sandy Sparks, this musical comes to life this December at Prairie High School (11311 NE 119th St., Vancouver, WA). Follow along as Shrek and Donkey set out on a quest to rescue Princess Fiona. Along the way, they meet a dragon, a gingerbread girl, Pinocchio, a not-so-wicked witch, the Three Pigs and a whole bunch more fairy tale creatures.
Shrek the Musical Jr. is an adventure the whole family will enjoy. Tickets can be purchased online in advance (https://wa-battleground-lite.intouchreceipting.com/RHLTheater) or at the door. Prices are $5 for children (3-10) and seniors, or $10 for general admission.
Showtimes will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6 and 13, with 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. showings on Saturday, Dec. 7 and 14.
Shrek the Musical Jr. is presented through special arrangement with Music Theater International, New York, NY.
Amboy Middle School held its first Experience Amboy event this past week, inviting families to visit the school, play games, enjoy activities and eat some free popcorn. Games included (frozen) turkey bowling, volleyball, bingo, arts and crafts and much more. What a great opportunity to see what it's like to be an Eagle!
ICYMI: In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, students in Andie Noye's fourth grade class at CAM Academy started looking for ways to help out. Noye connected with another fourth grade teacher, Courtney Jackson, who said many of her students in Martinez, Georgia, still lacked power. Others couldn't even play outside due to hazards like downed trees and power lines caused by the storm. So Noye's class began collecting board games, books, arts and craft, candy, stuffed animals and even homemade bracelets. The care packages recently arrived, and Mrs. Jackson says her students (pictured) had a blast reading the letters, playing the games and passing out the other gifts.
"Despite natural tragedies, like hurricanes, there's always a way to show we care," Noye said, "even when you are across the country."
Way to go, Panthers!

Here's a big shout out to recent Battle Ground High School graduate Abigail Hertner on stepping up with a big donation of clothing for the school's Thrift Shop, as well as our Family and Community Resources Center! Hertner, who is currently attending WSU Vancouver pursuing a business degree while working as an assistant manager at Maurices, talked the store manager into donating some discontinued items, rather than shipping them back to headquarters. An estimated 500 items of clothing, jewelry, hats, scarves, and shoes will now go to help families in need throughout the district. What a cool way to give back!

Earlier this week, fourth grade students at Yacolt Primary showed off their engineering skills. The challenge: create something that includes elements including a power source, a circuit and/or a working light or motor. Students then got the chance to show off their creation for other classes, as well as parents or visitors. Great job all around!
