Your Battle Ground Public Schools magazine (Tukes Valley Middle School students)

Your Battle Ground Public Schools, formerly a district publication, was revived in spring 2025 by Rye Dilley, then a sixth grader at Tukes Valley Middle School. With the support of many students and staff, the first issue came together to highlight the achievements, programs and community engagement of Battle Ground Public Schools, emphasizing student voice, recent student accomplishments and a dive into the district's history.  Read about this effort in The Columbian. Subsequent issues focus on student perspectives and news from around BGPS.

CASEE Connections (Center for Agriculture, Science and Environmental Education students)

Starting in November of 2025, the students at CASEE published their first newsletter called the CASEE Chronicles.

Freshmen

  • Wolf Haven Visit: Students learned about wolf behavior, anatomy, and the competitive relationship between coyotes and red wolves. A memorable story shared during the visit involved a wolf catching a rabbit during a kindergarten tour.

  • Never Cry Wolf Book Review: The book explores a biologist's journey to study wolves and their impact on caribou populations, revealing that hunters, not wolves, are the primary cause of caribou decline.

  • Isopods Experiment: Freshmen conducted experiments to study isopod behavior, discovering their preferences for damp soil, dark places, and social behavior.

Sophomores

  • Mount St. Helens Trip: Students explored the landscapes, conducted soil testing, identified trees, and pressed native plants for preservation. The trip included hikes, educational activities, and recreational moments like hide-and-seek and marshmallow roasting.

  • Plant Pressing: In the classroom, students preserved native plants by pressing and labeling them with detailed information.

Juniors

  • Agroecology Projects: Juniors grew plants (peas, kale, beets, chives, lettuce, radishes, Swiss chard) and measured their growth rates. They also conducted soil tests to determine the best plants for specific areas.

  • Chemistry Experiments: Students created a pH indicator using purple cabbage and tested it with various chemicals and foods.

  • Book Studies: Juniors read Silent Spring (focused on the impact of pesticides) and Braiding Sweetgrass (exploring Native American heritage and respect for nature).

Seniors

  • Microbiology Labs: Seniors studied microbes through hay infusions, Gram staining, and disk diffusion tests to analyze microbial cell walls and antimicrobial effectiveness.

  • Fermentation Projects: Seniors made sauerkraut and kimchi, learning about fermentation processes and monitoring the progress of their creations.

Mission Statement
In its contents and its practices, The Falcon Flyer will honor the mission and policies of Prairie High School. In all tasks, Falcon Flyer reporters will consider how their work might help better inform readers and how it might help people make their own choices.

The Falcon Flyer will educate, inform, entertain and present issues in a professional manner. The Falcon Flyer will strive toward excellence with the aim of being the primary source of Prairie High School information.

The Falcon Flyer intends to be a public forum for student expression and encourages all sides to voice their opinion. The Falcon Flyer is not subject to involuntary review prior to publication except by its own staff and adviser, and is therefore responsible for the news magazine’s contents.
